Title: 2012 to 2015
Info: Silkscreen, ink, 30” x 22”
Price: SOLD $400
Technique: For you print nerds and fellow artists, I used my hand dyed ‘hanks’ of fiber to expose my screen. (A hank is a bundle of fiber in a big loop, post dye bath - pre-wound into a ball.) Using an oversize dirty screen and these hanks of fiber I was able to acquire some wonderful marks. I then screen printed vibrant golden textile pigment to Rives BFK.
Old Print [history]:
This piece began as a screen print made in my days as a graduate student. Upon completing my MFA in March 2012, I set off to create an entirely new body of work for a small solo exhibition at The Invisible Hand. This wonderful local gallery was moving soon and I leapt at the chance to have a show before they closed their doors.
This piece was a reject.
I never exhibited it at the Invisible Hand. It sat waiting in my flat files for three long years.
New Life [redemption]:
As my daughter leapt into the terrific two’s in the Spring of 2015 I turned back to the prints that had sat abandoned for so long. I took these out and worked into them for 15 or 20 mins while she was occupied. It was freeing and refreshing and at the same time I was imbuing these old prints with new life. The process felt extraordinary!
2012 to 2015 began simply as intuitive drawing. A compulsive need to trace along the silkscreened marks developed, and I found myself spending free moments finishing long meandering lines. During this time the local Iowa landscape began to surface in my thoughts and vision. Summer was emerging, and with it thoughts of my teenage years spent zipping through the backroads and cornfields of Southern Iowa.
I have began to see that landscape in these pieces. The topography of the farmer’s plantings or perhaps an imaginary land, somewhere far off and unvisited, yet. What is it that you see?
So here come the most awkward part for artists. Did you enjoy the glimpse you received? It is my sincere wish to connect with you, and ultimately, for these pieces to find their way into your hearts, and homes.
