Summer is here. My time at the ISU Design on Main Gallery is dwindling. Since I did not get in to any of the residencies I applied for this summer, I thought, “Well Damn! I already have a residency at Design on Main. How about I just make up my own ‘residency’? A more focus period, say a week, to intensively work on my art.”
Arts Territory Exchange tagline says “Rural. Remote. Radical.” and has three general guidelines:
1. That your correspondences take place through the postal system in the main. (Although sharing work by digital means is also encouraged if it suits your practice).
2. Your exchange will be themed around the places, spaces and topographical terrains which surround you ( this can be interpreted in many divergent ways).
3. By participating in the exchange, you agree to sending us a selection of documentation from your correspondence to contribute to our archive.
Studio Experiments/ Thoughts
The places/spaces/topographical landscapes that surround me of late are:
Domestic Space of my home
Idea of ‘remoteness’ - not in terms of physical space but internal or emotional isolation. From my experience as a young mother. Isolated while surrounded by a flurry of activity or persons.
Labor - domestic labor (cleaning, washing, sorting) and the labor to create maps. I have recently found a map illustrating the paths that pilots take across the state while they are collecting the data to make the topographic maps. (see below)
